The Nitty Gritty on Cleansers: Part 2

More on Cleansers

Last week, Jules shared her cleansing routine with you, so this week I’m sharing mine. I have extremely oily, sensitive, acne prone skin. My skin also requires constant exfoliation or the dead skin cells build up rapidly. Here is the combination I have come up with to keep my skin smooth and minimize breakouts:

For acne: AcneFree Oil- Free Acne Cleanser with Benzoyl Peroxide has so far been the only thing to clear up my acne. I use this every few days to stay on top of breakouts, and few of their other products when I pimples catch up to me.

For smooth skin: The Neutrogena Wave! I can’t express how much I love this thing. My skin feels super smooth after every use. They also now make the Neutrogena Wave Sonic. This is the broke girls version of a Clarisonic, and is so worth the 16 dollars! I use this almost every day.

For gently removing makeup: Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser does the trick for me, without leaving my skin feeling tight. I use this after a heavy makeup day.

For that extra something: Olay Regenerist Daily Thermal Mini-Peel heats up when activated with water, so in addition to fading spots with glycolic acid, it helps steam out blackheads. It is also a gentle exfoliant. I use this every few days, but sometimes several days in a row.

There you have it. I hope you find something that works for you! Good luck, dolls!

How to Hide a Blemish

Ever woken up one morning to a fresh pimple, shining back at you in the mirror? We know we shouldn’t do it, but sometimes you just can’t resist the urge to pop it! And then we suffer the consequences. Usually the red, swollen, oozing bump is worse than what it started as, and what’s worse, now your concealer won’t stick! Good news. There is something you can do!  You’ll need a few things:

Cleanser

Calamine lotion

Toner (witch hazel works well)

Liquid bandage

Cotton swabs and cotton balls

First, wash your face with your usual cleanser. If you’ve already washed your face, just take a cotton ball with toner and go over the area.

Using a cotton swab, apply some calamine lotion to the pimple. This will dry it out so it doesn’t continue to ooze, and also reduces swelling. Let the lotion sit for 5-10 minutes.

Remove the calamine with toner on a cotton ball.

Use a cotton swab to apply a very thin layer of the liquid bandage to the pimple. Liquid bandage contains antiseptic which will keep new bacteria from building up during the day. Only apply one thin layer, because any more could make the edges peel up.

Once the liquid bandage is dry, you can apply your makeup as usual. Be careful around the pimple just to make sure not to disturb the bandage.

Note: This may not work for all skin types. If you notice any irritation, discontinue use.

Hope this works for everyone else as well as it works for me! And don’t forget to give us your feedback &

How to Grow Pretty Lashes - Part 2

You’ve probably seen advertisements for Latisse on television or online. Although I’ve heard it has amazing results, not all of us can afford to spend $100+ on a tiny bottle of eyelash enhancer. Luckily, I found an inexpensive growth enhancing serum that (gasp!) actually seems to work! I bought this product on a whim, and it has definitely paid off.

Ardell Brow & Lash Growth Accelerator is a clear gel with a mascara wand applicator. It not only nourishes the hair to encourage growth, but it protects the lashes and keeps your brows in place! I personally saw fuller eyebrows after about a month of using it daily. My recommendation is to swipe a coat on your eyelashes and eyebrows every morning before putting on your eye makeup.

And the best part: it’s only about $3.99 in drugstores! You can find it with other Ardell products in the false lash section.

Use this product in conjunction with Jules’ other recommendations for lash care. You can find her blog here.

Liquid vs. Powder Foundations: How to Choose

Recently, a friend asked me, “Which is better? Liquid or powder foundation?” I figure it’s a valid question and many women probably have the same one. So here is what I told her:

Liquid Foundations

Most, though not all, liquid foundations are oil based. They work well for dry or normal skin. If your skin is very dry, look for a hydrating formula. If you have oily skin, you want to be more selective of your liquid foundation. Look for words like “oil-free”, “non-comedogenic”, and “matte”.

Many women fear liquid foundation, thinking it will settle into fine lines and wrinkles. While this can sometimes be true, it is almost completely a thing of the past. Many liquid foundations are being formulated with serums and moisturizers that plump lines, fill wrinkles, and sit on top of the skin, creating a smooth finish even on mature skin. In fact, there are many foundations that are targeted to mature skin.

In general, liquid foundation offers fuller coverage than powder.

Powder Foundations

Powder foundations absorb oil, so they work well on oily skin. They can help to maintain a matte finish under unfavorable conditions, like the summer heat. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear powder foundation if you have dry skin. There are many hydrating powder foundations on the market now, and they feel fantastic on the skin.

Most powders have light to medium coverage, or take a lot of building for full coverage.

Before the Foundation

You can’t forget your moisturizer and/or primer. Those simple steps can make a huge difference in the appearance of your foundation. Choose a silicone-based primer that sits on top of lines and leaves a silky finish.

These days, there are many formulations for all skin types in a variety of coverages, so choosing a powder or liquid is mostly just a matter of preference. Use this information as your guide to choose a foundation that will work for you.

DIY Lip Gloss!

Since I have kind of become the DIY girl, I decided to start a series on DIY beauty products. You may remember the DIY Pore Strips (if not, check it out here). This week, we’re making our own tinted lip gloss! This is super simple. All you’ll need is:

-       petroleum jelly

-       a beet, or a few carrots (fresh, not canned!)

-       buddy cups (found at Michael’s in the soap-making and painting aisles)

-       microwave safe bowl

-       knife

-       hand masher or juicer

Choose what color you want your lip gloss to be. Choose the beet for lighter pink to deep burgundy, or the carrot for light orange to deep red orange.

Chop up the veggies into small cubes.

Microwave your veggies in a microwave safe bowl for a little under a minute. Juice should start seeping out.

Mash your veggies or put them in a juicer to extract as much juice as possible.

Put a small amount of petroleum jelly in a buddy cup and add the vegetable juice a few drops at a time until you achieve the desired color.

Because there are no preservatives in this lip gloss, it will only last a couple weeks safely. Keep it in the fridge at night while you aren’t using it to keep it lasting a little longer.

Also, petroleum doesn’t add moisture to your lips, but it does help retain moisture. You learn how to hydrate your lips, read my past blog on supple lips.

Extra tidbit: You can use these same fresh juices to tint your hair!  Enjoy your DIY lip gloss!  Don't forget to share on Facebook, Tweet, &
